Well, it's official. The academic standards required to join the Armed Forces are higher than those needed to graduate from most American high schools.
How do we know this? One of our specialties over the years has been helping people who want to join the military to pass the entrance exam - the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). Every year 350,000 people fail this test. Nearly all have high school diplomas, which begs the question: how can they graduate from high school but fail to meet the military's minimum academic standards? You may be surprised to learn this, but the Armed Forces are one of the best educational institutions in the country. Think about it: they need to train people in a variety of skills from landing a fighter plane to running a nuclear reactor to speaking Chinese. They must do this in a fixed amount of time and teach to a standard that has very little room for error since their decisions are often life-or-death. What college can compete with that pressure? Like our other remediation classes, ASVAB test preparation (and the similar GED) requires a small-group setting with direct instruction. The results? On average our candidates improve their test scores 90% with just 15 hours of class time. |
